Okinawa Island Circuit by Bicycle — 8 Days

A 400-kilometer cycling route around Okinawa's main island, connecting Ryukyuan castles, World Heritage forests, and traditional villages

Okinawa stands apart within Japan—a subtropical island with distinct cultural roots, endemic wildlife, and a documented concentration of centenarians whose longevity is often attributed to local diet and lifestyle. This eight-day bicycle tour traces a circuit around the island's perimeter, moving through sites that span eight centuries of Ryukyuan history and natural geography. The route passes Shuri Castle and Katsuren Castle ruins, the Yambaru Forest (a World Natural Heritage site), mangrove estuaries, limestone cliff formations, and villages where traditional spiritual practices and communal economic systems (moai) continue to shape daily life. Accommodation includes hotel stays; guided exploration of temples, shrines, and archaeological sites; and meals reflecting local food culture. Van support accompanies the group throughout.

Day by day

1Arrival in NahaNaha · Kokusai Street
Travelers arrive in Naha, the historical capital of Okinawa Prefecture. The city reflects Ryukyuan heritage alongside postwar Japanese development, with Kokusai Street and the surrounding old and new city districts open for independent exploration. In the evening, the group assembles for bicycle fitting, a trip briefing, and an opening dinner.
2Naha to Motobu — Shuri Castle and Coastal VillagesNaha to Motobu · Shuri Castle · Naminoue Shrine · Yachimun no Sato
The cycling tour begins with a stop at Naminoue Shrine to offer prayers for safe passage. The route then moves through Naha toward Shuri Castle, a World Cultural Heritage site where Ryukyuan kings once ruled and where Japanese and Chinese architectural styles merge. The path continues north through Chatan, an area where postwar U.S. presence remains visible in its mixed American and Japanese character. Yachimun no Sato, a pottery village with red-tiled kilns, offers opportunities to observe and purchase hand-crafted ceramics. The final stretch follows Okinawa's largest coastal resort area, where ocean views accompany the ride northward.
3Kunigami to Kouri Island — Traditional Villages and Coastal BayKouri Island · Kunigami Village · Hanajinaikai Bay
The route reaches Kunigami Village, where traditional red-tiled Okinawan houses line streets bordered by Fukugi trees, planted historically as natural windbreaks. The sanshin, a traditional three-stringed instrument, remains central to local cultural life. Leaving the village, the route passes Hanajinaikai Bay, a tranquil expanse dotted with small islets that serve as seasonal habitat for migratory birds. The Kouri Big Bridge spans two kilometers across the bay, creating an extended view of the water below. On Kouri Island itself, the settlement dates to the Ryukyu Dynasty (1429–1879), and the surrounding waters show the contrast between cobalt ocean and emerald coral reefs and white beaches.
4Yambaru Forest and Cape Hedo — World Heritage SanctuaryYambaru Forest · Yambaru Forest villages · World Heritage Area border accommodation
The route enters the World Natural Heritage designated Yambaru Forest, a subtropical sanctuary sustained by warm waters of the Kuroshio Current and restored over decades by local stewardship. As cyclists visit the forest and surrounding villages, traditional Okinawan places of worship appear throughout—wells preserved as memorials to past water sources, and other sacred sites integral to community life. The moai system, a traditional form of rotating financial cooperation, and sustained mutual concern among residents are understood as linked to the region's documented longevity. The accommodation sits on the border of the World Heritage Area, where the Yambaru-kuina, Japan's only flightless bird species, occasionally appears.
5Henoko — Mangrove Estuaries and Geological FormationsHenoko · Oura River · Kayo Formation
A forest ride emerges to views of the Oura River, where it meets the sea and forms one of Okinawa's largest mangrove forests. The mangrove trees survive in saltwater through specialized root systems and shelter diverse sea creatures at tidal zones. The route then approaches the Kayo Formation, a layered cliff sequence spanning millennia with visible fossil traces marking the island's geological history. The day's accommodation includes access to an Okinawan hot spring fed with ancient seawater drawn from deep underground.
6Katsuren Castle to Hamahiga Island and YonabaruKatsuren Castle · Kaichu Road causeway · Shirumichu sacred site
The route climbs to the ruins of Katsuren Castle, where local lords resisted assimilation into the Ryukyuan kingdom and held the fortress until its fall. The stone structure, perched on natural cliffs with gracefully curved walls, is recognized as a World Heritage site for its dual significance as both fortress and Utaki—a place of worship where Okinawan nature deities are venerated. The Kaichu Road causeway crosses toward Hamahiga Island, legendary birthplace of Amamikyo, the founder deity of Ryukyuan culture. The Shirumichu sacred site on the island draws year-round worshipers seeking ancestral connection and spiritual energy.
7Chinen Cape to Naha — Sacred Sites and ReturnChinen Cape · Naha · Sefa Utaki · Peace Memorial Park · Itoman
Cyclists reach Chinen Cape, near the World Heritage Site Sefa Utaki, with panoramic ocean views including the sacred Kudaka Island, where the ancestral deity Amamikyo is said to have descended from heaven and introduced agriculture by planting the five grains. Peace Memorial Park follows, honoring World War II casualties. The route then passes through Itoman, a historic port town with maritime traditions reflected in the Itoman Hare boat-paddling event (held in the fifth lunar month) and the preservation of sabani, traditional Okinawan fishing and transport vessels. The final ride returns to Naha, completing the island circuit. The evening concludes with a farewell gathering.
