Old Delhi by Bicycle: Mughal Architecture and Street Markets — 3.5 Hours

Morning cycling through 17th-century Shahjahanabad: Turkman Gate, Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk, and Red Fort

Old Delhi, built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century as Shahjahanabad, remains largely contained within the walls and gates he commissioned. The Turkman Gate, Jama Masjid, and Red Fort stand as physical records of that era—the mosque capable of holding 25,000 devotees, the fortress a climax of 600 years of Indo-Islamic palace architecture. Chandni Chowk, designed by Shah Jahan's daughter Jahanara, developed into one of India's largest markets. This three-and-a-half-hour cycling tour moves through the old city's street grid by bicycle, beginning before dawn at the Turkman Gate to catch sunrise light, then passing through markets, past the residence of 19th-century Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib, and concluding with breakfast at a long-established restaurant in the quarter.

Highlights

  • Sunrise at Turkman Gate, the southern entrance to Shah Jahan's fortified city, now isolated on a traffic island
  • Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India, completed by Shah Jahan with a courtyard capacity of 25,000
  • Red Fort, the fortress palace complex commissioned by Shah Jahan in 1648, representing the architectural pinnacle of Mughal rule
  • Chandni Chowk, the 17th-century market designed by Jahanara, spanning multiple blocks through the old city
  • Ballimaran, the 19th-century residence of poet Mirza Ghalib, offering insight into Mughal-era domestic architecture
