Philippines Wetland & Coastal Birds — 5 Days

Candaba Marsh, Bataan Peninsula, Subic Bay, and Hundred Islands — bird watching across the East Asian-Australia Flyway

This five-day itinerary traces the migration corridor that defines northern Philippine bird habitat, moving from freshwater marshes through mangrove forests to coastal archipelagos. The route begins at Candaba Wildlife Conservation Park in Pampanga, a complex wetland system of ponds, swamps, and grasslands that hosts Philippine Duck, Purple Swamp Hen, and numerous heron and egret species. From there, it proceeds to Bataan Peninsula—positioned along the East Asian-Australia Flyway—where three distinct bird watching zones offer roosting grounds and feeding areas for resident and migratory waterbirds. The journey then crosses to Subic Bay Freeport Zone for additional wetland observation, before reaching Hundred Islands off Alaminos in Pangasinan, where 123 islands and islets provide habitat for both local and migratory species. The route concludes in the Bangrin Marine Protected Area, where mangrove boardwalks allow close-range observation of herons, plovers, and other coastal birds. Transfers are by road and boat; accommodation includes stays in Bataan, Subic, and Pangasinan.

An early morning departure leads to Candaba Wildlife Conservation Park in Sitio Simang, Barangay Visal, Pampanga. Candaba is a complex wetland of water ponds, swamps and marshes with surrounding areas of grassland and arable land that is usually flooded in the wet season and dries out during the dry season. The site regularly hosts Philippine Duck, Purple Swamp Hen, and Pheasant-tailed Jacana, alongside diverse egret, heron, and bittern species and seasonal migratory waterfowl. Mid-morning, the route continues to Bataan Peninsula, positioned along the East Asian-Australia Flyway and functioning as a significant stopover for migrating forest and water birds. Three primary bird watching zones operate here: Puerto Rivas-Ibaba features a preserved thick mangrove forest, grassland, and wetland areas serving as roosting grounds for crows, waterhens, rails, kites, doves, herons, and egrets; the area is also known for dried and smoked fish production. Tortugas combines mangroves and mudflats that provide roosting and feeding grounds for waders and waterbirds including Wood Sandpiper, Great Egret, Whimbrel, and Whiskered Tern, as well as fishponds and wetlands supporting various migratory and resident bird species. Massive numbers of migratory birds concentrate at Bataan from September through March. Dinner and overnight accommodation in Bataan.
