Rajasthan by Bicycle: Delhi, Jaipur & the Taj Mahal — 15 Days

Cycle through Rajasthan's countryside, temples, and forts from Delhi to Agra, with stays in heritage properties and wildlife safari.

Rajasthan's landscape—from Delhi's monuments to the sacred lakes of Pushkar, the palace cities of Jaipur and Udaipur, and the Taj Mahal in Agra—is experienced most directly from a bicycle. Over 15 days, this route moves between urban centres and rural villages, following smaller roads through farmland and past the architectural records of Rajput and Mughal rule. Cyclists pass through the countryside around Chittorgarh, stay within the walls of a 16th-century castle in Bijaipur, and spend a night in a 400-year-old fort in Madhogarh. A two-day break in Ranthambhore National Park allows for wildlife safaris in search of tigers, leopards, and other species. Meals, local guides, and accommodation in heritage properties and hotels are included throughout.

The route passes several forts dotting the landscape, with stops along the way for photographs and to take in the surroundings. Once you reach Pushkar, the final stretch is completed by vehicle. In the evening, a guided walk introduces you to the sacred city. You'll pass Pushkar Lake, where 52 ghats line the water's edge and pilgrims come to bathe, believing the act cleanses them of sins and disease. Brahma Mandir, one of India's rare temples dedicated to the Hindu creator Brahma, is also on the route. The town's main street buzzes as a tourist market, offering time to browse for souvenirs or simply wander and absorb the rhythm of this pilgrimage town.
5Cycling Through Farmland to UdaipurUdaipur · small, quiet roads across red soil and through fields and farms · Beawar
Cyclists ride on small, quiet roads across red soil and through fields and farms, covering roughly half the distance to Udaipur. A stop is made in Beawar; the remaining journey is completed by support vehicle. Udaipur, known as the Venice of the East, sits amid the Aravalli Hills and curves around Lake Pichola. Two palaces—Jag Mandir and Jag Nivas—rise from the water. Accommodation awaits upon arrival.

After breakfast, cyclists ride rural roads to Ratangarh, where the support vehicle takes over for the drive to Bundi—a popular Rajasthan destination known for intricate architecture, cultural heritage, and history. A leader-led walking tour visits the town's narrow streets lined with blue Brahmin houses, bazaars, temples, shops, and local markets. Ancient, ornately carved step wells (baoris) once supplied water to the city. The 17th-century Bundi Palace overlooks the town and displays exquisite murals.
10Cycling to Ranthambhore National ParkRanthambhore National Park · Bundi · Lakheri
The group departs Bundi and cycles mostly flat roads beneath towering sandstone escarpments through classic Rajasthani rural landscape to Lakheri. The bicycles are then left behind and the support vehicle drives to Ranthambhore National Park. Once a hunting ground for the Maharajas of Jaipur, the park is now a major wildlife reserve and the best location in Rajasthan for wild tigers. Arrival is in the late afternoon, allowing time to rest before an early safari the following morning.
11Ranthambhore Wildlife SafarisRanthambhore Fort · Ranthambhore National Park
A pre-dawn safari searches for leopards, wild boar, hyenas, nilgai, birds, and tigers. Deep within the jungle lies Ranthambhore Fort, founded in AD 944. The ruins of Badal Mahal and Hammirs Court pavilions hint at the structure's former scale. In the late afternoon, a second safari on a canter bus visits a different park sector to increase the likelihood of spotting tigers.
12Final Cycle to Fort MadhogarhFort Madhogarh · Madhogarh · Ranthambhore · Lalsot · farmland and small villages · small village
The group departs Ranthambhore and drives to Lalsot, where bicycles are retrieved for the final day of cycling. Surrounded by hills, the ride passes through farmland and small villages to Madhogarh, arriving by late afternoon. The cycling crew is left behind. An evening exploration of the small village precedes a night at Fort Madhogarh, a 400-year-old structure built by Madho Singh Ji and once a battlefield of the Kachwaha Rajputs. The fort was converted into a family-run hotel in 2000 to finance its upkeep.
13Agra & the Taj MahalAgra · the Taj Mahal · Akbar's Mausoleum
A bus journey carries the group to Agra, a city of temples, gardens, and palaces rich in Mughal heritage. The Taj Mahal—one of the Seven Wonders of the World—is visited. Built by Emperor Shah Jahan as a memorial to his wife Mumtaz Mahal, the poet Rabindranath Tagore described it as a 'teardrop on the face of eternity.'
