Rajasthan's Desert Route: Delhi to Jaisalmer — 11 Days

A circuit through Mughal capitals, fort cities, and desert landscapes — from Delhi's Old City to Jaisalmer's sand dunes, with stops in Agra, Jaipur, Pushkar, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Mandawa.

This 11-day route moves through India's northwestern tier, anchored by two UNESCO monuments—the Taj Mahal in Agra and the historical ensemble of Rajasthan's fort cities. The journey begins in Delhi with its fusion of Mughal and colonial architecture, then proceeds via Fatehpur Sikri to Jaipur, the Pink City, where Amber Fort reflects the royal heritage of Rajasthan. A detour to Pushkar introduces the geography of pilgrimage temples and desert plains. Westward, the route follows the Aravalli ridge through Udaipur's lakeside palaces and Jodhpur's indigo-painted merchant quarters before reaching the Thar Desert proper at Jaisalmer, where sandstone fort architecture rises from dune terrain. The closing loop through Bikaner and Mandawa includes the frescoed havelis of Shekhawati, which reflect the region's prosperous merchant era. Transportation throughout is by private vehicle with English-speaking guide; daily breakfast and lunch at hotels are included. The itinerary balances major monuments with secondary towns and allows for camel rides, lake cruises, and market time in bazaars.
