South Korea: Seoul to Busan by Mountain and Coast — 8 Days

A walking journey from Seoul's urban core through Seoraksan's granite ridges to Busan's clifftop temples and beaches

This eight-day itinerary traces a route from Seoul southeastward to the Sea of Japan coast and back inland to South Korea's second-largest city. The trip centers on walking: urban routes through Seoul's palaces and stream corridors, a mountain day in Seoraksan National Park, coastal paths along Busan's southern cliffs, and a night spent in a traditional hanok in the Confucian village of Hahoe. The pace allows time to sit in small restaurants, to climb at your own tempo, and to move between regions by regional rail and car rather than by constant transfers. Most days involve 4–8 km of walking on marked trails or urban pedestrian routes.

Highlights

  • Inwangsan Mountain hike offering views across Seoul's palace district and skyline
  • Full-day trek through Seoraksan National Park, including Sinheungsa Temple and granite valleys (15 km peak route available)
  • Overnight stay in a hanok traditional house in Hahoe Folk Village, with access to the UNESCO-listed Byeongsanseowon Confucian Academy
  • Igidae coastal walk (4.7 km) along Busan's clifftop rim above the open sea
  • Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, a Buddhist sanctuary built into seaside rock faces near Busan

Day by day

1Arrival in SeoulSeoul · near your hotel
Arrive in Seoul. Settle into your hotel and take an unstructured first evening to orient yourself to the city's scale and rhythm—the subway system, the density of the downtown districts, the interplay between traditional low-rise neighborhoods and high-rise commercial zones. No scheduled activities; this is your chance to walk local streets, eat near your hotel, and begin adjusting to the pace.
2Inwangsan Hike & Seoul's Historic CenterInwangsan Mountain · Seochon neighborhood · Gyeongbokgung Palace · Gwanghwamun Square · Cheonggyecheon Stream · Myeongdong
Start early with a hike up Inwangsan Mountain, a modest peak within the city limits that commands views across Gangnam, Namsan, Seoul Tower, and the cluster of Joseon Dynasty palaces. Descend to Seochon neighborhood, where small restaurants and tea rooms occupy preserved hanok alleys. After lunch, visit Gyeongbokgung Palace, the largest of Seoul's royal compounds, where you can walk the courtyards and pavilions where court ceremonies and governance took place for centuries. Stroll through Gwanghwamun Square (statues of King Sejong and Admiral Yi Sun-sin), then follow Cheonggyecheon Stream, a restored urban waterway that runs through downtown. End in Myeongdong, the commercial heart, where street food vendors and clothing shops cluster on pedestrian lanes.
3Nami Island & Journey to SokchoNami Island · Central Market · Sokcho Beach · Bukhan River to Sokcho
Travel north by rail or car to Nami Island, a crescent of land in the Bukhan River known for its tree-lined promenades and as a filming location for the Korean drama Winter Sonata. Walk or zipline across the island, taking in views of the river valley below. Continue eastward by road to Sokcho, a port town on the East Coast. Visit the Central Market, where vendors sell fresh seafood, dried fish, and local street snacks. Spend the evening at Sokcho Beach, a long arc of black sand facing the open sea.
4Seoraksan National Park Full-Day TrekSeoraksan National Park · Sinheungsa Temple · Sokcho
Dedicate a full day to Seoraksan National Park, a mountainous reserve known for its granite peaks, forested valleys, and Buddhist temples. Walk through Jujeongol Valley (easier route) or push toward Daecheongbong Peak (15 km, more strenuous). Along the way, pass through forests of maple and conifer, cross clear mountain streams, and visit Sinheungsa Temple, a Buddhist sanctuary established in the ninth century and set within the park's inner valleys. A cable car offers optional ascent to higher viewpoints. Return to Sokcho in the evening.
5Sokcho to Andong & Hahoe Folk VillageHahoe Folk Village · Buyongdae Cliff · Byeongsanseowon · a hanok
Travel west inland to Andong, a town in the southeastern highlands historically significant as a center of Neo-Confucian scholarship. Begin at Buyongdae Cliff, where a short walk yields a panoramic view across the Nakdong River to Hahoe Folk Village opposite. Enter Hahoe on foot, walking through lanes lined with tile-roofed hanok houses whose owners have preserved them as residences and small museums. Visit Byeongsanseowon, a Confucian academy where scholars gathered to study and debate classical texts—the site houses a library, courtyards, and meditation halls. If a Mask Dance performance is scheduled, it will run in the evening. Sleep in a hanok (a traditional house converted for guests) and eat dinner prepared from local ingredients.
6Andong to Busan via Historic & Contemporary NeighborhoodsAndong to Busan · Amidong Tombstone Village · Gamcheon Culture Village · Gukje Market
Drive south to Busan, South Korea's primary port and second-largest city. Begin in Amidong Tombstone Village, a residential neighborhood where above-ground stone tombs mark family graves dating back centuries, creating an unusual street-level landscape. Move to Gamcheon Culture Village, built on hillside terrain as a refuge camp and now a district of narrow lanes, colorful murals, and small galleries. Visit Gukje Market, a covered bazaar packed with street food vendors, dried goods shops, and fabric stalls. An evening at your hotel allows you to rest before tomorrow's coastal walk.
7Igidae Coastal Walk, Haedong Yonggungsa & Haeundae BeachIgidae · Haeundae Beach · Haedong Yonggungsa Temple
Undertake a 4.7 km coastal walk along Igidae, a clifftop pedestrian trail that rises and falls above rocky outcrops and the open sea. Views extend to the Gwangan Bridge (a modern cable-stayed span) and the Busan skyline. Descend to Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, a Buddhist sanctuary perched on seaside rock faces where a staircase leads down to a small shrine built into a cave and a platform overlooking the water. The temple sits among rare coastal Buddhist sites in Korea. Continue to Haeundae Beach, Busan's main sandy strand, where you can walk the shore or rest at an open café as evening light falls.
8Busan DepartureBusan · Gimhae International Airport
A final morning in Busan before your departure. Depending on your flight or train time, you may take the KTX high-speed train back to Seoul, a domestic flight, or depart directly from Gimhae International Airport.
