Sri Lanka: Ancient Cities, Tea Gardens & Wildlife — 14 Days

Sigiriya to Galle via Kandy, Horton Plains, and Yala National Park — 14 days with cycling, trekking, and wildlife safaris.

This 14-day journey moves through Sri Lanka's central highlands and southern coast, connecting archaeological sites, tea estates, and protected wildlife reserves. The itinerary begins in the Habarana cultural zone near Sigiriya Rock, then cycles through the ancient city of Polonnaruwa before ascending to Kandy for temple visits and village-based cooking demonstrations. A night hike to Adam's Peak precedes trekking in Horton Plains National Park, followed by a scenic train descent to Ella and a tuk-tuk excursion through the Bandarawela tea estates. Leopard safaris in Yala National Park and a traditional catamaran fishing trip precede three days of beach rest in Talalla, with a final morning exploring Galle Fort. Throughout, accommodation mixes lodge stays with village homestays and a safari camp, each chosen to ground the traveller in local contexts rather than removed resort enclaves.

Day by day

1Arrival and Transfer to HabaranaColombo to Habarana · The Other Corner Lodge
Pickup and transfer from Colombo to Habarana covers approximately 4 to 5 hours by road with rest stops. The Other Corner Lodge in Habarana serves as the base for the first three nights. The afternoon is free for poolside rest or independent walks in the local area surrounding the lodge.
2Sigiriya and Habarana Cultural Jeep ExpeditionSigiriya and Habarana landscape · authentic interior village · village blacksmith, carpentry workshop, and brick-making operation · villager's house · The Other Corner Lodge in Habarana
Begin with breakfast at the lodge before embarking on a classic off-road jeep ride through the Sigiriya and Habarana landscape. Your local guide leads you through an authentic interior village, past rice paddies and vegetable fields, stopping at small lakes, an ancient temple, and a working monastery. The route takes in traditional craftsmanship—a village blacksmith, carpentry workshop, and brick-making operation—alongside vendors' stalls and forest sections where water buffalo, birds, and crocodiles move freely. Elephant sightings are possible though uncommon. This is an unfiltered cultural immersion, deliberately avoiding staged attractions and mass tourism sites. Lunch—a home-cooked rice and curry meal—is served at a villager's house. The afternoon brings you back to The Other Corner Lodge in Habarana for a swim and rest before the evening.
3Polonnaruwa Ancient City Cycling and Minneriya Elephant SafariPolonnaruwa · Minneriya National Park · The Other Corner Lodge
After breakfast at the hotel, a one-hour transfer takes you to Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka's second-most ancient ruined city. You'll cycle through the sprawling archaeological park, moving between hundreds of structures that chart the city's former grandeur—temples and stupas, tombs and statues, each a fragment of how life unfolded here centuries ago. In the afternoon, around 3 p.m., an experienced naturalist guides you on safari through Minneriya National Park. The park is one of the world's finest places to encounter wild Asian elephant herds. During July and August, concentrations peak; single groups can number 200 to 300 animals moving together across the landscape. You return to The Other Corner Lodge in Habarana for the night.
4Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Transfer to KandySigiriya Rock Fortress · Kandy · Matale · family homestay in Kandy
An early breakfast precedes the climb of Sigiriya Rock Fortress, where a 5th-century royal residence built by King Kasyapa crowns a rocky plateau. The site served as a monastery from the 3rd century BC before the king's construction transformed it into an architectural complex. The fortress encompasses palace ruins, extensive gardens, ponds, canals, and a network of fortifications that speak to both defensive strategy and aesthetic ambition. Following the ascent, a transfer leads to Kandy, Sri Lanka's most venerated city. The route passes through Matale, where Muththumariamman Hindu Temple offers a brief stop. Dedicated to the goddess Mariamman—associated with fertility and rain—the temple reflects the region's Hindu heritage. Upon arrival in Kandy, you'll be welcomed into a family homestay for two nights. This arrangement provides genuine contact with local life, allowing direct experience of the city's culture, daily rhythms, and domestic hospitality. Dinner and overnight stay are included at the homestay.
5Local Market and Cooking Demonstration in Kandya local market · the homestay · Temple of the Tooth Relic
The morning begins with a visit to a local market to observe and select home-grown vegetables and spices. Back at the homestay, a cooking session with the host family results in a traditional lunch prepared by the traveller. The afternoon is free for independent exploration or a visit to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, housed within Kandy's Royal Palace and holding what is venerated as Lord Buddha's tooth. The evening includes preparation of string hoppers or hoppers—Sri Lankan staple foods—with the family, followed by dinner together.
6Kandyan Village to Nelli Gala Mountain Temple and Adam's PeakNelli Gala mountain temple · a nearby village · a 600-year-old Kandyan ancestral mansion · Kelani River · Slightly Chilled Guest House
Begin with an early walk through a nearby village as it wakes—observing morning routines, children heading to school, and the rhythm of agricultural life. Visit a 600-year-old Kandyan ancestral mansion, where a tour through its corridors reveals stories of the region's past. Refresh with a cup of green leaf porridge accompanied by jaggery, a traditional palm sugar sweet, before setting out for Nelli Gala mountain temple. The trek crosses paddy fields, spice gardens, and natural water springs. Expect a moderately strenuous climb via narrow footpaths to reach the peak, which rewards with 360-degree panoramic views across the mountainous Kandyan countryside. Participate in morning temple rituals—Buddhist chanting and the peeling of temple bells create an atmosphere of peace and contemplation. After descending, return to the homestay for a freshly prepared traditional breakfast. Say farewell to the local family and begin the 3 to 4-hour drive toward Adam's Peak. En route, white-water rafting on the Kelani River is available as an optional activity for those seeking additional adventure. Arrive at Slightly Chilled Guest House near Adam's Peak for overnight stay, positioned to begin your ascent to one of Sri Lanka's most sacred pilgrimage sites the following morning.

A specialist guide collects travellers between midnight and 1 a.m. to begin the hike to Adam's Peak summit. The climb occurs during active Buddhist pilgrimage, with worshippers ascending to venerate Lord Buddha's sacred footprint. Sunrise crowns the summit. Descent follows a less-travelled path through cloud forest, revealing distant waterfalls and tea estates in their natural reserve setting. A transfer eastward arrives in NuwaraEliya, a colonial-era hill station. Overnight at Glenfall Reach Hotel.

Horton Plains National Park, a 1.5-hour drive from NuwaraEliya, occupies a high-elevation plateau formerly used as a hunting ground by British and Scottish planters and now designated a biodiversity hotspot. A trekking route leads to World's End—a dramatic cliff viewpoint—and Baker's Waterfall. The park is home to sambar deer and elusive leopards; high-elevation birds are commonly observed. Horton Plains forms part of the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary chain leading to Adam's Peak, visible from the heights. The Kiritgalpotta and Thotupola Kanda mountains—Sri Lanka's second and third highest peaks—stand within the park boundaries, and four of the country's major rivers originate here. From the remote hamlet of Ohiya, a scenic train departs southeastward for Ella, following a route through tea gardens and mountain terrain. Overnight at Waterfall Home Stay in Ella.
9Ella: Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam's Peak HikeNine Arch Bridge · Little Adam's Peak · Waterfall Home Stay
The morning is unscheduled, allowing rest at the homestay or independent exploration of Ella's surroundings, including the Nine Arch Bridge—a British colonial-era railway viaduct. An afternoon hike ascends Little Adam's Peak, a 2-hour round-trip trek to a mountain summit offering highland views and requiring moderate exertion. Overnight at Waterfall Home Stay.
10Tea Estate Tuk-Tuk Expedition and Transfer to YalaBandarawela · Lipton's Seat · Yala lake · Yala Adventure Lodge
Bandarawela, 45 minutes' drive from Ella, hosts an adventurous tuk-tuk ride through working tea estates followed by walking paths across the plantation landscape. Lipton's Seat—a viewpoint once used by Sir Thomas Lipton to observe his tea empire—is visited. A transfer southeastward arrives in Yala.
