Sri Lanka: Ancient Kingdoms, Wildlife & Coastal Routes — 16 Days

Sigiriya, Kandy, Yala and the south coast by jeep, train and boat — cultural sites, elephant and leopard viewing, and colonial-era towns

This 16-day circuit moves through Sri Lanka's primary archaeological zones and national parks in a single itinerary. Starting in Colombo, the route travels inland to Sigiriya Rock Fortress (5th-century palace ruin), continues through Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura—both UNESCO sites from successive ancient kingdoms—then descends into the central highlands via scenic railway to tea plantations and Horton Plains. The second half turns toward wildlife: a full day in Yala National Park for leopard and elephant viewing, then the southern coast at Galle (16th-century Portuguese fort, now a living town of boutique hotels and cafes) and Negombo's fishing villages. Throughout, accommodation sits in established hotels and safari camps; transfers are by private vehicle with English-speaking driver. Activities include village walks, a cooking class, a 12-km countryside cycle, a boat trip through Hamilton Canal, and visits to Buddhist temples and a Tamil Hindu shrine.
