Sri Lanka: Ancient Ruins, Wilpattu Safari & Sigiriya — 7 Days

Negombo to Colombo via Anuradhapura, Wilpattu National Park, and the Sigiriya Rock Fortress — seven days in the cultural and wildlife heartland

This seven-day circuit moves through three distinct landscapes of Sri Lanka's interior — the ancient sacred city of Anuradhapura, the leopard habitat of Wilpattu National Park, and the rock fortress plateau of Sigiriya — before returning to Colombo. Accommodation throughout is in small independent hotels and a safari lodge, chosen for local character rather than resort scale. A full-day guided safari in Wilpattu, Sri Lanka's largest national park, is the wildlife centrepiece. The ruins of Anuradhapura — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and still an active Buddhist pilgrimage destination — anchor the cultural dimension, as does the Dambulla Cave Temple visited on the return leg. The strict nature reserve at Ritigala, less frequented than the more prominent sites, adds a quieter historical counterpoint. A cycling excursion from Habarana through the farming villages surrounding Sigiriya reaches the rock fortress base, from which the summit climb to King Kassapa's ruined palace is possible. Private transfers with an English-speaking driver connect each stage throughout.

Day by day

1Arrival at Kammala Village, South of Colombo AirportKammala · Colombo International Airport · surrounding area · nearby beach
On arrival at Colombo International Airport, a private transfer takes guests south to Kammala, a village approximately 30 minutes from the airport. The first night is spent in a small countryside hotel in this quiet locality. The evening allows for a leisurely walk through the surrounding area or a short cycle to a nearby beach before the itinerary begins in full the following morning.
2Anuradhapura Ruins by Bicycle, then Wilpattu National Park SafariAnuradhapura · Wilpattu National Park · safari lodge near the park boundary
The day opens with a cycling excursion through Anuradhapura, the ancient capital of Sri Lanka's first major kingdom. The ruined temples, palaces, and dagobas of this UNESCO World Heritage Site remain an active pilgrimage destination; Buddhist rituals at the sacred sites can be observed alongside the archaeology. From Anuradhapura, the route continues to Wilpattu National Park, Sri Lanka's largest protected area and the primary habitat for its leopard population. A full-day guided safari covers the park's characteristic 'villus' — natural lakes that attract wildlife — with picnic meals included in the field. Sloth bears and a wide range of bird species are also recorded regularly. Two nights are spent at a simple safari lodge near the park boundary.
4Ritigala Forest Monastery, then Habarana — Cycling to Sigiriya Rock FortressHabarana · Sigiriya Rock Fortress · Ritigala Strict Natural Reserve · farming fields, irrigation lakes, and small villages surrounding the Sigiriya plain · Habarana hotel
The transfer to Habarana passes through the Ritigala Strict Natural Reserve, a forested highland holding the ruins of an ancient forest monastery. Less visited than the main Cultural Triangle sites, Ritigala carries both historical and ecological significance; the forest is a notable birdwatching site. Habarana serves as a base for the next two nights, with accommodation in a small eco-oriented nature hotel. In the afternoon, a cycling excursion departs with a local village guide through the farming fields, irrigation lakes, and small villages surrounding the Sigiriya plain. The route reaches the base of Sigiriya Rock Fortress, where you have the option to climb to the summit. From the base, the summit climb leads to the ruins of the 5th-century palace built by King Kassapa, along with the famous frescoes and the Lion Gate partway up the ascent. Time at the pool at the Habarana hotel offers a quieter interlude during the morning before the afternoon excursion.
6Dambulla Cave Temple, then Colombo — Final NightDambulla Cave Temple · a boutique hotel in Colombo
On the road back to Colombo, the route stops at the Dambulla Cave Temple, a complex of five rock-hewn sanctuaries that constitute Sri Lanka's largest cave temple. Dambulla Cave Temple is an important cultural and historical heritage site worth taking time to visit. The final night is spent at a boutique hotel in Colombo.
7Colombo Departure TransferColombo hotel
A private transfer from the Colombo hotel to Colombo International Airport concludes the itinerary, completing a seven-day circuit through Sri Lanka's ancient ruins, national parks, and cultural landmarks.
