Sri Lanka: Beach, Dolphins & Wilpattu Wilderness — 10 Days

Kalpitiya's marine life, Wilpattu National Park safaris, and coastal rest days across 9 nights

This 10-day itinerary balances extended beach time at Kalpitiya with a two-night inland safari in Wilpattu National Park. The first week centers on the Kalpitiya Peninsula, a headland in the Indian Ocean where spinner dolphins gather in large pods and sperm whales appear regularly throughout the year. A brief stay in Negombo follows, before departure from Colombo. Days shift inland to Wilpattu, where dry-zone jungle contains both resident and migratory wildlife: Sri Lankan elephants, leopards, sloth bears, spotted deer, and bird species including endemic jungle fowl and painted storks. The park's natural lakes—called villus—dot the landscape and support significant wetland populations.

Highlights

  • Dolphin and whale watching from Kalpitiya Peninsula, where spinner dolphins and sperm whales are regularly sighted in the Indian Ocean
  • Evening and early-morning game drives in Wilpattu National Park, with opportunities to see Sri Lankan leopards, elephants, and sloth bears in dry-zone jungle
  • Naturalist-guided tours of Wilpattu's system of shallow lakes, which attract resident and migratory waterbirds including garganey, pintails, spoonbills, and painted storks
  • Extended beach time at Kalpitiya, with four full days to rest and visit the coastal settlement
