Sri Lanka: Beach, Whale Watching & Safari — 10 Days

Tangalle coastal resort, Indian Ocean whale watching, and two national parks with game drives

This 10-day itinerary pairs extended coastal time on the south coast with wildlife viewing across two distinct ecosystems. The route begins in Tangalle, a quieter beach town where accommodation sits on a reef-fringed shore; a day trip to Mirissa offers seasonal whale and dolphin watching (December through April). After five nights of beach-based relaxation, the itinerary shifts inland to Yala National Park, where dry-season concentrations of elephants, water buffalo, sloth bears, and occasional leopards gather near reservoirs and water sources. A final game drive takes place in Udawalawe National Park before returning to Colombo for departure. Throughout, transfers are by private vehicle with English-speaking driver; safari camps provide all-inclusive meals during park stays.

Highlights

  • Whale and dolphin watching from Mirissa, December through April, when blue whales and sperm whales frequent the Indian Ocean near the coast
  • Multi-day game drive in Yala National Park, observing elephants at Butuwe and Mahaseelawa reservoirs, wild buffalo, and the endemic sloth bear
  • Coastal accommodation at Anantara Peace Heaven Tangalle Resort on a reef-protected beach
  • Full-day game drive in Udawalawe National Park with safari camp dining and lodging
  • Private vehicle transfers throughout with air-conditioned comfort and local guide commentary

Day by day

1Arrival in Colombo & Transfer to TangalleAnantara Peace Heaven Tangalle Resort · Colombo airport · Colombo to Tangalle
International arrival in Colombo is met by a representative at the airport lounge. A private vehicle transfer heads south to Tangalle. Check-in occurs at Anantara Peace Heaven Tangalle Resort, a beachfront property positioned on a reef. The evening allows time to settle and rest after travel.
2Tangalle Beach & Resortreef-protected beach · Anantara Peace Heaven Tangalle Resort
A full day based at the resort affords time to acclimate to the coastal setting. The property provides private balconies or terraces overlooking either the ocean or manicured gardens, with daybeds, dining tables, and views across the reef-protected beach. Swimming, reading, or simply observing the coastline are the day's primary occupations.
3Whale and Dolphin Watching from MirissaTangalle to Mirissa · Indian Ocean off Mirissa · Mirissa to Tangalle
An early-morning transfer departs Tangalle for Mirissa. Local boat operators launch into the Indian Ocean a few kilometers offshore, where experienced guides identify marine mammals during the December to April season. Pods of dolphins frequently accompany boats; blue whales and sperm whales migrate through the waters off Mirissa during these months and are viewable from standard charter vessels. The boat excursion typically lasts several hours. Travelers are advised to bring sun protection — lotion, hat, and sunglasses — as wind and water reflection intensify exposure. Return to Tangalle in the afternoon allows time to rest by the beach before evening.
4Tangalle Beach & ResortTangalle Beach & Resort
Another full day at the resort follows a similar pattern to Day 2, offering continued beach access, private balcony or terrace time, and the option to swim or relax within the grounds and along the reef-protected shore.
5Tangalle Beach & ResortTangalle Beach · the resort
A third consecutive day at the property maintains the same structure: breakfast at the resort, beach time, and optional use of private dining or daybed facilities overlooking the garden or ocean.
6Transfer to Yala National Park & First Game DriveYala National Park · Ruhunu Safari Camping
Following breakfast, a 2-hour drive inland heads toward Yala National Park in the southeast. The group meets the safari crew at Yala Junction at noon and transfers into Ruhunu Safari Camping. Lunch is served at camp. An evening game drive departs in an open safari vehicle to observe wildlife during the cooler daylight hours. Dinner and overnight lodging take place at the camp.
7Full-Day Game Drive in Yala National ParkYala National Park · Uraniya region · camp · Butuwe and Mahaseelawa reservoirs
A complete day of game drives with picnic meals takes in the park's primary wildlife zones. Yala hosts the "big four" of Sri Lankan fauna: Asian elephants, sloth bears, leopards (elusive and nocturnal), and wild buffalo. During dry-season months, elephant herds congregate at small reservoirs — Butuwe and Mahaseelawa are reliable viewing areas for these larger groups. The Uraniya region attracts aquatic birds, wild buffalo, mugger crocodiles, and saltwater crocodiles. Sloth bears are solitary, nocturnal animals with seasonal visibility; sightings are not guaranteed but possible. The park's landscape — grassland, scrub forest, and water sources — supports predator and prey interactions typical of South Asian dry-zone reserves. Guides manage timing and routes to maximize sightings. A barbecue dinner is held at camp before overnight stay.
8Transfer to Udawalawe National Park & First Game DriveUdawalawe National Park · Udawalawe Safari Camping
After breakfast, a drive heads west to Udawalawe National Park. The group meets the safari crew at the park entrance at noon and transfers to Udawalawe Safari Camping. Lunch is served at camp. An evening game drive surveys the park's wildlife corridor, which supports a different but overlapping mix of species compared to Yala. Dinner and overnight lodging take place at camp.
9Transfer to ColomboColombo · Cinnamon Red
After breakfast, a drive heads north to Colombo. Check-in occurs at Cinnamon Red, a central hotel in the capital. The evening is free.
10Departure from ColomboColombo International Airport
A final breakfast precedes a 20-minute transfer to Colombo International Airport for departure.
