Sri Lanka by Train, Bus & Local Transport — 22 Days

Independent travel through Colombo, Anuradhapura, Kandy, the Hill Country, and the south coast by public rail, intercity bus, and local transport

This 22-day independent itinerary across Sri Lanka relies entirely on public transportation—trains, buses, and tuk-tuks—to connect ten destinations spanning the cultural triangle, tea plantations, and Indian Ocean coastline. The route alternates between guided cultural exchanges (village farming, cooking classes, wildlife observation) and self-directed exploration of markets, temples, and coastal towns. Accommodation moves between city hotels, rural farmstay, beach cabanas, and guest houses; meals are on a bed-and-breakfast basis except for two nights of full-board at the Wellawaya farm stay. This structure is designed to provide genuine interaction with Sri Lankan communities while allowing travellers to set their own pace and priorities at each stop.
