Sri Lanka: Eighteen Days of Endemic Bird Watching — Wetlands, Forests & National Parks

A comprehensive survey of Sri Lanka's premier birding sites across 18 days, featuring extended stays at Anawilundawa, Wilpattu, Mannar, Sigiriya, Kitulgala rainforest, Bundala, Yala and Sinharaja.

This eighteen-day itinerary covers the full range of Sri Lanka's bird-watching geography, from coastal wetlands to montane forest reserves. The route prioritizes endemic species and migratory flocks, with three-night stays at each major site to maximize sighting opportunities. Travellers will move through twelve distinct habitats: the man-made wetland at Anawilundawa (constructed in the 12th century and positioned on a major migratory route); the dry-zone jungle lakes of Wilpattu National Park; the flamingo grounds and migrant staging areas around Mannar; the forest reserve surrounding Sigiriya Rock; the lowland rainforest patches near Kitulgala; the complex wetland systems of Bundala; the semi-arid scrub and coastal lagoons of Yala; and the montane rainforest of Sinharaja. Bird guides with knowledge of local endemic hotspots not widely documented in standard field guides accompany walks throughout. The itinerary includes morning and evening sessions timed to peak activity hours, vehicle safaris, rainforest treks to waterfalls, and night walks for nocturnal species such as the slender loris.
