Sri Lanka in Three Days: Wilpattu, Anuradhapura & Sigiriya

Wildlife safari, ancient ruins, and rock fortress — 3 days from Colombo

This three-day itinerary moves north from Colombo through Sri Lanka's cultural and natural landmarks. The route begins in Wilpattu National Park's dry-zone jungle, where morning and afternoon game drives track leopards, elephants, and sloth bears across flood-plain lakes. Day two combines a second park drive with the ancient city of Anuradhapura, a Buddhist capital abandoned in 993 after invasion and now restored from dense jungle — its palaces, monasteries, and monuments date from the 3rd century B.C. The final day includes Sigiriya Rock Fortress and a village cart tour before returning to Colombo. The trip accommodates varied interests in natural history, archaeology, and rural life without requiring specialist fitness or experience.

Day by day

1Colombo to Wilpattu National Park and Afternoon SafariColombo · Wilpattu National Park · Hotel Sinharagama
A driver collects passengers in Colombo for a four-hour transfer north to Wilpattu National Park, arriving in the early afternoon. The park spans thick dry-zone jungle interspersed with flood-plain lakes bordered by white sand. An afternoon safari moves through expanses of forest habitat where deer, wild boar, leopards, sloth bears, and elephants are commonly sighted. The forest supports diverse flora adapted to the drier climate of the north-central region. Overnight stay is at Hotel Sinharagama within or near the park boundary.
2Morning Safari and Transfer to Anuradhapura Ancient CityAnuradhapura · Wilpattu National Park · Sorowwa Resort & Spa · Wilpattu National Park to Anuradhapura · Anuradhapura to Habarana
A morning game drive covers additional areas of Wilpattu National Park before mid-morning departure toward Anuradhapura. The drive takes approximately two hours. Anuradhapura, established around the 3rd century B.C., was a political and religious capital of the Ceylonese kingdoms that flourished for 1,300 years before abandonment following invasion in 993. The site lay hidden within dense jungle for centuries and has been progressively excavated. Walking tours cover restored palaces, monasteries, and monuments, including the original location of the sacred fig tree cutting — the Buddha's tree of enlightenment — brought from India by Sanghamitta, founder of an order of Buddhist nuns. Late afternoon transfer to Habarana, approximately one hour. Overnight stay at Sorowwa Resort & Spa.
