Sri Lanka & Maldives: Eco Lodges, Hill Country Rail & Reef — 16 Days

Negombo to the Maldives via Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, and Galle — 16 days of homestays, farmstays, and a house-reef island

This 16-day itinerary moves through six distinct regions of Sri Lanka before crossing to the Maldives, connecting a colonial-era seaside town, a UNESCO-listed rock fortress, a hill-country tea estate railway, a rural farm on the Yala National Park border, a Dutch-walled fort town, and a residential Maldivian island with a house reef — all within a framework of eco lodges, family homestays, and small guesthouses rather than resort hotels. The Sri Lanka sector is covered by private transfer with an English-speaking chauffeur, with a second-class train ticket from Kandy to Ella included. The Maldives sector runs on shared speedboat transfers. Accommodation across 15 nights includes breakfast; the Kandy homestay and the Wellawaya farm stay operate on an all-inclusive basis that covers house activities. International and domestic air transfers are arranged separately.

Day by day

1Arrival in Negombo — Airport-Side Base Before the Journey NorthNegombo
Negombo, a seaside town roughly 20 minutes by road from Bandaranaike International Airport, serves as the first night's base. The accommodation is a 3-star hotel with a swimming pool — a practical choice that avoids a long first-day transfer and allows for an early start toward Sigiriya the following morning.
2Sigiriya: Rock Fortress, Cave Temple & Village Cyclingtreehouse set within the landscape around Sigiriya · Sigiriya Rock · surrounding rural villages · Dambulla Cave Temple · Polonnaruwa ruins
Two nights at a treehouse set within the landscape around Sigiriya, with both Sigiriya Rock and Pidurangala Rock within close reach. A local villager accompanies cycle routes through surrounding rural villages. Sigiriya Rock — a 5th-century royal citadel — anchors the cultural exploration here. Dambulla Cave Temple and Polonnaruwa ruins are both described as 'not to miss' historical monuments of Sri Lanka, and are accessible during this stay.
4Kandy Homestay: Local Bakery, Market Visit & Cooking at the Family Homethe family home · a traditional local bakery · a local market · Temple of the Tooth Relic
Kandy is covered over two nights with accommodation at a private family homestay, offering a close look at daily domestic life in Sri Lanka's hill capital. On the first day, the host accompanies guests to a traditional local bakery — a working neighbourhood bakery where bread can be made by hand on-site. On the second day, a visit to a local market precedes a hands-on cooking session at the family home, preparing a traditional Sri Lankan meal using market-bought ingredients. Time is also available for independent exploration of the city, including a visit to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, which holds the sacred relic of the Buddha and sits at the centre of Kandy's cultural and religious life. The homestay operates on an all-inclusive basis, covering meals and house activities.
6Kandy to Ella by Train — Tea Country Rail Journey & Hill Town BaseKandy to Ella · Ella · Ella Rock · Little Adam's Peak
The train from Kandy to Ella travels along a rail line originally constructed during British colonial rule to carry tea from the hill-country estates down to Colombo port. The journey passes through tea plantations, patches of montane forest, and small highland villages — a route widely regarded as one of the most scenic rail journeys in South Asia. Second-class tickets are included. The guesthouse in Ella sits with views across the surrounding mountains. For those inclined toward walking, Ella Rock requires a moderate hike from the town, while Little Adam's Peak offers a shorter and less demanding ascent with comparable ridge views.
8Wellawaya Farm Stay: Yala Borderlands, Elephant Sightings & Lakeside LifeWellawaya farm · Wellawaya farm fields · Wellawaya farm lake
Two nights near Wellawaya are spent at a working farm on the boundary of Yala National Park, in a traditional clay-walled, thatched-roof house that overlooks a lake used by wild elephants. The setting functions as a private wildlife vantage point: elephants move through the lakeside area regularly, visible from the house itself. The farm grows fruit and vegetables using cultivation methods passed down across generations of local farmers, and guests can walk the fields to see the agricultural practices in operation. The lake accommodates fishing and canoeing in a traditional catamaran. On the final evening at the farm, the farmers prepare an outdoor BBQ dinner beside a campfire. The farm stay operates on an all-inclusive basis, covering meals and house activities.
10Galle: Dutch Fort, Countryside Cycling & Cinnamon PlantationsDutch Galle Fort · countryside surrounding Galle · sea-facing ramparts of Galle Fort
The final two nights of the Sri Lanka sector are based in Galle, the southern coastal city whose built fabric reflects four centuries of Dutch colonial settlement. A local guide leads a cycling route through the countryside surrounding the city, passing working paddy fields, cinnamon plantations, Buddhist temples, and the agricultural villages of the southern lowlands. Within the city, the Dutch Galle Fort — a UNESCO World Heritage Site enclosing a grid of colonial-era streets, churches, and merchant houses — rewards a slow afternoon walk. The sea-facing ramparts are a well-known point for watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean, and a range of restaurants operating within the fort walls provides options for an evening meal.
12Colombo to the Maldives: Residential Island Arrival & House ReefColombo International Airport · a residential island · a shallow reef · neighbouring atolls · the residential island
A one-hour flight from Colombo International Airport connects to Malé, the capital of the Maldives. From Malé, a shared speedboat transfer reaches a residential island — one of the inhabited local islands that form the social and economic fabric of the Maldives outside the private resort atolls. The island has a shallow reef accessible directly from the beach, allowing snorkelling over coral and marine life without a boat. The water remains calm and clear throughout the year. Available activities during the four-night stay include diving with manta rays, deep-sea fishing, island-hopping between neighbouring atolls, sandbank picnics, and beach dining. Accommodation is in a local guesthouse on the island.
16Maldives Departure: Speedboat to Malé & Homeward Flightresidential island · Malé International Airport
A one-hour speedboat journey from the residential island returns to Malé International Airport for the onward flight home. Shared return speedboat transfers are included in the itinerary.
