Sri Lanka: Nuwara Eliya to Ella via The Pekoe Trail — 4 Days

High-altitude trek across tea estates, mountain villages and forest descent from Sri Lanka's central highlands to Ella Valley

This four-day trek follows stages 10 through 15 of The Pekoe Trail, a long-distance walking route that connects Nuwara Eliya to Ella across Sri Lanka's central highlands. The route descends from Horton Plains through tea estates, working villages, and montane forest toward the Ella Valley. Walkers stay in small mountain lodges and village homestays, spending nights in Ohiya, Haputale, Bandarawela, and ending in Ella. The trek involves sustained elevation gain and loss across each stage, with terrain ranging from windswept grassland to plantation paths to forest canopy. Most days include encounters with tea-plucking communities and views across the southern plains and distant peaks. An optional extension adds a day-hike to Single Tree Hill above Nuwara Eliya, plus a train journey to the trail's start.

4Makulella to Ella: Stage 15 via Ella RockElla Rock · Single Tree Hill above Nuwara Eliya · Nanuoya Railway Station to Ohiya · Makulella to Ella via Ella Rock
The final day of your Active Adventure begins after a warm breakfast as you set out on stage 15 of The Pekoe Trail, trekking from Makulella to Ella via the famous Ella Rock. This moderately challenging stage encompasses 250 meters of elevation gain and 450 meters of descent, taking you through Sri Lanka's scenic hill country. The route winds through emerald tea plantations, dense forests, and quaint villages that dot the landscape. Ella Rock itself serves as a notable landmark and viewpoint partway through the trek, offering perspective on the terrain you've covered. The terrain is mixed throughout—plantation paths give way to forest trails, with sections of steeper descent requiring careful footing as you approach the town of Ella. As you trek, you'll move through working tea country where the landscape shifts between open hillsides and tree cover. The combination of elevation change and varied terrain makes for engaging hiking, and the descent into Ella provides views across the surrounding valleys. The trek concludes in the town of Ella, where your Active Adventure tour ends. If you wish to extend your time in Sri Lanka's hill country, an optional 1-night add-on is available. This extension includes a trek up Single Tree Hill above Nuwara Eliya (approximately 200 to 300 meters of elevation gain from around 1,800 meters to 2,100 meters above sea level), with bird's-eye views of Lake Gregory and surrounding tea plantations. The extension continues with a scenic train ride from Nanuoya Railway Station to Ohiya, followed by a short tuk-tuk ride to your lodge for the night.
