Sri Lanka's Pekoe Trail — 7 Days Through the Central Highlands
Trek Galaha to Ella through tea estates, cloud forests and mountain villages
The Pekoe Trail is Sri Lanka's first long-distance trekking route across the Central Highlands from Galaha to Ella. The route winds through working tea plantations, patches of cloud forest, remote villages, and along ridgelines that command views across the island's highest terrain. Walkers encounter tea pickers at work, pass through small settlements, cross streams and occasional waterfalls, and sleep in homestays and estate bungalows where local hospitality is direct and evident. The trail is designed to move trekkers through a functioning landscape rather than a preserve — the plantations are active, the villages are inhabited, and the paths follow routes used daily by residents. Local guides lead each day and accompany all meals, providing context about the region's history, tea production, and the lives of mountain communities.
