Sri Lanka: Tea, Wildlife & Coast — 6 Days

Colombo to Kandy to Yala to Bentota via central highlands tea region and mountain railway

This six-day itinerary moves through Sri Lanka's three distinct zones: the colonial port city of Colombo, the cultural centre of Kandy with its historic Temple of the Tooth Relic, and the central highlands where tea plantations are located. A narrow-gauge railway descends from Nanu Oya station to Bandarawela through montane forest, one of Asia's most travelled scenic routes. From there, the route turns southeast toward Yala National Park, where jeep safaris access dry scrub habitat and lagoon edges frequented by leopards, sloth bears, elephants, and saltwater crocodiles. The final days follow the southern coastline—rocky headlands, fishing villages, and the Dutch-era fortification at Galle—before ending on the beach at Bentota. Throughout, travel is by private vehicle with a local guide, with scheduled stops at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, the Royal Botanical Garden at Peradeniya, and working tea estates where processing methods and tasting are part of the visit.
