Sri Lanka Wildlife & Cultural Circuit — 10 Days

Kandy villages, Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Minneriya elephants, and Wilpattu National Park, with an optional Maldives extension

This ten-day Sri Lanka itinerary moves from the coast at Negombo through the mountain villages of Kandy, across the ancient sites of the Cultural Triangle, and into the wildlife zones of Habarana and Wilpattu. Each section has a distinct character: Kandy offers close contact with rural agricultural life, local transport, and forest waterfalls; Habarana positions travellers within reach of Polonnaruwa's UNESCO-listed ruins, the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, and Minneriya National Park, where large elephant herds gather during the dry season; and Wilpattu, Sri Lanka's oldest national park, is the primary habitat for leopard and sloth bear. Accommodation throughout is small-scale — eco lodges, rustic mountain properties, and basic safari camps — chosen for proximity to the natural or historical setting rather than resort amenity. Private transfers with an English-speaking driver connect each location, and specialist local guides lead excursions in their respective areas. The itinerary is designed to run year-round, with conditions varying by season across the different regions. A Maldives beach extension is available at the end of the circuit for those wishing to add a coastal stay.

Highlights

  • Rural village visit in the hill country around Kandy, travelling by local bus with stops at home gardens and a river bathing site (approximately half a day, low physical demand)
  • Waterfall swimming in the hill country near Kandy, accessible by road (seasonal water levels vary; strongest flow during and after the monsoon)
  • Cycling tour of Polonnaruwa's ancient ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (approximately 3–4 hours by bicycle, flat terrain, bike hire included)
  • Ascent of Sigiriya Rock Fortress (moderate fitness required)
  • Guided naturalist walk focused on Sri Lanka's primate species in the forests around Habarana (approximately 2–3 hours, walks at a steady pace on forest trails)
  • Jeep safari in Minneriya National Park to observe wild elephant herds (half-day, shared or private jeep; large aggregations most reliably observed July–October during the dry season)
  • Full-day game drive in Wilpattu National Park, habitat for leopard, sloth bear, and spotted deer (approximately 6–7 hours including two drive sessions, entrance and jeep hire included)
  • Optional extension to the Maldives for a beach stay, available at atoll resorts or local residential islands (duration and cost additional, flights arranged separately)
