Sri Lanka: Wildlife, Heritage & Village Life — 20 Days

Kumana and Yala National Parks, central highlands trekking, Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, and stays in rural farmland and village homestays across 20 days

This 20-day itinerary moves across Sri Lanka's wildlife zones, archaeological sites, and hill-country villages, mixing structured safari days with village-based cultural stays and moderate-to-strenuous trekking. The route begins in the eastern parks near Arugam Bay, shifts inland through the central highlands via foot and train, and concludes with jungle and temple exploration in the central cultural triangle. Accommodation ranges from rural farmland lodges to village homestays to mid-range hotels, with most meals included. The pacing alternates between active days (safari, trekking, cycling) and rest days built into longer stays, allowing flexibility for individual exploration. Transport is by air-conditioned vehicle with driver throughout, and most major activities include guide services. Several days involve steep terrain or pre-dawn starts (notably the Adam's Peak hike and Kirigalpoththa trek), and seasonal variables — particularly forest closures and monsoon conditions — affect route execution. This itinerary suits travellers comfortable with variable accommodation standards, rural environments, and a mix of structured group activities and independent village time.

Following a brief rest, the farm operator guides a private evening jeep safari through the property's backyard in an old Land Rover to a hidden lake. Sunrise is viewed from the top, and the pilgrim community and atmosphere at the summit during this period provide context to the site's religious significance. The trek takes approximately 4–5 hours uphill. Descent occurs via an alternate route through cloud forest, passing tea estates and distant waterfalls when forest department access permits this route; if the alternate route is closed by the forest department, descent uses the main pilgrimage path.
