Sri Lanka: Wildlife Safari and Bird Trails — 7 Days

Jeep safaris through four national parks tracking elephants, leopards, and endemic birds across wetland, savanna, and forest habitats

This seven-day itinerary moves through Sri Lanka's primary wildlife reserves, beginning in the montane forests of Kitulgala and progressing through the lowland parks of Udawalawe, Bundala, and Yala. The route centers on morning and evening safari drives and bird-watching walks, timed to coincide with peak animal activity. Kitulgala's forest trails yield endemic species—Orange-billed Babblers, Chestnut-backed Owlets, Green Pit Vipers—and a diversity of butterflies and reptiles. Udawalawe's open grassland and reservoir support a permanent population of approximately 250 Sri Lankan elephants, among the easiest on the island to observe. Bundala's wetlands attract around 100 water bird species, including seasonal Greater Flamingos in flocks exceeding 1,000 birds, alongside resident Lesser Whistling Ducks, Little Cormorants, and waders. Yala, the largest reserve, holds all four members of Sri Lanka's 'big four' wildlife: elephant herds, sloth bears, leopards (elusive and primarily nocturnal), and wild buffalo. Transfers between parks involve three to four-hour drives; accommodation is provided in safari lodges positioned near park gates. All meals, park entrance fees, and English-speaking guide services are included.

Day by day

1Arrival in Colombo and Transfer to KitulgalaKitulgala · Colombo International Airport · Kitulgala Adventures · Colombo to Kitulgala
Meet your representative at Colombo International Airport and transfer to Kitulgala, a 2-hour drive inland. An evening bird-watching trail visits the village surroundings. Overnight at Kitulgala Adventures.
2Kitulgala Bird Watching and Forest WildlifeKitulgala · Kitulgala's forests · the village · Kitulgala Adventures
Start early with a bird-watching trail through Kitulgala's forests, a destination prized by nature enthusiasts for its concentration of endemic species. The region consistently yields sightings of Sri Lanka Orange-billed Babblers and Chestnut-backed Owlets, along with reptiles including Green Pit Vipers and Earless Lizards. A variety of butterfly species inhabit the trails as well. After breakfast at the camp site, spend the rest of the day at leisure or exploring the immediate surroundings. An evening bird-watching walk in the village provides another opportunity to observe local wildlife as light conditions shift. Return to Kitulgala Adventures for the night.
3Udawalawe National Park SafariUdawalawe National Park · Nil Diya Mankada Safari Lodge
After breakfast, a transfer takes you south to Udawalawe National Park, a reserve centered on its reservoir and surrounding grassland. The landscape here favors wildlife viewing across open terrain. You'll visit the park on an evening safari drive, searching for elephants, buffalo, and other inhabitants as light begins to soften. The day concludes at Nil Diya Mankada Safari Lodge.
4Udawalawe Elephants to Bundala's WaterbirdsUdawalawe National Park · Bundala National Park · Yala Lake Camp
Begin with a morning safari at Udawalawe National Park, where Sri Lankan elephants congregate around the reservoir. The park's open habitats make these animals relatively easy to locate—roughly 250 are permanently resident here. The elephants' attraction to the water creates reliable sighting opportunities across the landscape. Mid-morning, transfer south to Bundala National Park, a coastal wetland system of lagoons and shallow waters. An evening safari follows, focusing on Bundala's avian wealth. The park hosts approximately 100 bird species, with half being seasonal migrants. Greater Flamingos from India's Rann of Kutch arrive in massive flocks exceeding 1,000 individuals, though their numbers fluctuate seasonally. Year-round residents include Lesser Whistling Ducks, Garganey, Little Cormorants, Indian Cormorants, Grey Herons, Black-headed Ibises, Eurasian Spoonbills, Asian Openbills, and Painted Storks. Medium and small wading species of Tringa and Charadrius subspecies are common. Rarer sightings include Black-necked Storks, Lesser Adjutants, and Eurasian Coots. Overnight stay at Yala Lake Camp.
5Full-Day Safari in Yala National ParkYala National Park · Butuwe and Mahaseelawa · Uraniya reservoir · Yala Lake Camp
A full-day safari in Yala National Park covers the island's largest wildlife reserve and its primary habitat for all four members of Sri Lanka's 'big four': elephants, sloth bears, leopards, and wild buffalo. Elephant herds move seasonally to smaller reservoirs—Butuwe and Mahaseelawa—during the dry season, where they congregate and are readily visible. Uraniya reservoir is known for aquatic birds, wild buffalo, and both Mugger and saltwater crocodiles. Sloth bears, solitary and primarily nocturnal, are harder to encounter; sightings are seasonal. Leopards remain elusive, requiring persistence and luck. The reserve spans varied terrain, and safaris follow established routes through grassland and scattered woodland. Overnight stay at Yala Lake Camp.
6Tissamaharama Bird Walk and Return to ColomboTissamaharama · Cinnamon Red hotel · Tissamaharama to Colombo
A morning bird-watching walk covers the forest and reservoir system at Tissamaharama, near Yala's boundary. After breakfast, the journey north begins with a transfer back to Colombo by road. Overnight accommodation is at Cinnamon Red hotel in the capital.
7DepartureColombo International Airport
After breakfast, transfer to Colombo International Airport for departure, approximately 1 hour from the hotel.
