Sri Lanka: Wildlife, Temples & Coast — 12 Days

From Colombo's colonial quarters through Minneriya and Yala National Parks to the fort towns of the south coast, with temple visits and highland train travel.

This 12-day itinerary moves across Sri Lanka's principal wildlife and cultural zones in a single arc: colonial Colombo and its markets; the heritage sites and elephant grounds around Habarana and Kandy; a scenic train descent into the central highlands; tea country around Nuwara Eliya; the southern national parks; and the coastal forts and fishing villages of the south and west. The route combines large protected areas—Minneriya, Horton Plains, and Yala—with temple visits spanning Buddhist, Hindu, and colonial-era architecture. Travel is by road, rail, and boat; accommodation ranges from heritage hotels to safari lodges. The itinerary permits observation of wildlife (elephants, leopards, sambar deer, crocodiles, and seasonal whale populations) alongside cultural sites and landscape photography opportunities at each stage, without privileging any single activity.
