Syakaro Historic Trail: 22km National Trek from Wufeng to Jianshi

A full-day hike across Hsinchu County's remote National Trail, featuring Japanese-era ruins and a 140-meter suspension bridge

The Syakaro Historic Trail is a 22-kilometer thru-hike that traverses Hsinchu County between Wufeng and Jianshi townships. Named for "black heart stone" in the Atayal language, the trail has been designated a National Trail in Taiwan and counts among the country's most established long-distance hiking routes. The route climbs between 1,247 and 1,507 meters in elevation, gaining 260 meters total across moderate-to-challenging terrain that includes ladder sections, scrambling over uneven ground, and several suspension bridges. Hikers pass through abandoned Japanese-era police stations and cross the 140-meter-high Baishi Suspension Bridge spanning a forested valley. The trail is remote, well-maintained, and takes approximately eight hours to complete. Private transportation departs Taipei Main Station before dawn and returns late in the day, making this a full commitment but removing the need for logistics planning at either trailhead.

Pickup begins at 05:30 from Taipei Main Station (arrange transportation to the station in advance, as this departs before metro service begins). From the pick-up location at Taipei Main Station, guests will take private transportation to the trailhead of Syakora Historic Trail in Wufeng Township, arriving around 08:30. From here, the group begins the 22-kilometer hike through mixed forest and exposed ridgeline sections. The trail crosses multiple suspension bridges, most notably the Baishi Bridge at 140 meters high, which spans a steep valley. Hikers pass several abandoned Japanese-era police stations and other historical structures scattered along the route, remnants of Taiwan's colonial period. The terrain is intermediate—no single obstacle is technically demanding, but the cumulative distance and uneven ground require sustained effort. Several sections include fixed ladders on steep descents and scrambling over rough terrain; those uncomfortable with exposure or climbing should self-assess before committing. The route climbs to roughly 1,500 meters and finishes in Jianshi Township by approximately 17:30. Private transportation then returns the group to Taipei Main Station, arriving around 21:45. Bring your own breakfast, lunch, and snacks, as no water or food is available along the trail; carry sufficient water for the entire day.
