Taipei by Bike: Three Loops from the City Center — 3 Days

258km of car-free paths, Yangmingshan climbs, and tea-terrace descents, based from one central hotel

This three-day cycling tour returns to the same Taipei hotel each night, removing the friction of daily transfers while covering the region's three most distinct routes. The first day follows the Taipei riverside bike path system—one of Asia's longest car-free networks—along the city's edges. The second climbs into Yangmingshan National Park, 25 kilometers north of the city center, where steep gradients and forest roads form the technical core of the route. The third departs south through tea-growing regions toward Pinglin and Shiding, descending via Thousand Island Lake. Each route is GPS-mapped and guided; accommodation, meals, and daily insurance are included.

Highlights

  • Ride 65 kilometers on Taipei's riverside bike path system, the longest car-free cycling network in Asia
  • Climb the 8-kilometer Balaka ascent, the most-ridden climbing route in the Taipei cycling community
  • Pedal through Yangmingshan National Park, where wild monkeys and buffalo graze on extinct volcanic terrain
  • Descend through Pinglin's tea terraces and visit Shiding Old Street on the 109-kilometer final loop
  • Circumnavigate greater Taipei on 258 kilometers of dedicated, car-free bike paths

Day by day

1Taipei Riverside Bike Paths: 65 Kilometers Along the City Edgehotel · riverside bike path system
Meet your guide at the hotel to review bikes and nutrition before heading to the purpose-built riverside bike path system. This car-free network stretches across the city's perimeter, offering clear sightlines to Taipei's urban landscape without competing with motor traffic. The 65-kilometer route covers roughly 292 meters of elevation gain over 3.5 hours of riding, making it an accessible introduction to the city's cycling infrastructure and a calibration day for the two harder rides ahead.
2Yangmingshan National Park: Mountain Roads North of TaipeiYangmingshan National Park
Travel north to Yangmingshan National Park, situated 25 kilometers from Taipei Main Station. The 72-kilometer circuit enters steep terrain immediately, with sustained climbs through forest canopy and sinewy mountain roads. This day gains 1,245 meters of elevation across 4.5 hours of riding, making it the physical centerpiece of the tour. The park's volcanic landscape hosts wild monkeys and water buffalo; the roads themselves attract serious cyclists year-round.
3Pinglin-Shiding LoopPinglin · Taipei · Thousand Island Lake
A 109-kilometer circuit climbing out of Taipei through forested ridges, then descending to Thousand Island Lake. The route finishes with a climb through tea terraces around Pinglin. Six hours, 1,877 meters of elevation gain.
