Taipingshan National Forest: Cypress Forest & Mountain Train — Day Tour from Taipei

Round-trip from Taipei to a 2-hour protected conifer forest with six hiking trails, the historic Bong Bong Train, and door-to-door transportation

Taipingshan National Forest sits two hours northeast of Taipei, accessible only by private vehicle and advance planning — making a guided day trip the most practical way to reach it. The park occupies high elevation terrain near Taiwan's Pacific coast, where maritime moisture condenses into persistent fog that gives the cypress and hemlock forests a temperate rainforest character more familiar from North America's Pacific Northwest. Six maintained trails branch through old-growth forest, including the 1-kilometer Cypress Trail through groves of fallen ancient trees, the 2.2-kilometer Taiwan Hemlock route through what locals call a "fairy forest," and the 0.9-kilometer Jancing Historic Trail, which traces flat terrain past abandoned logging trestle bridges and Japanese-era timber infrastructure. The Bong Bong heritage train, originally built to transport logs down the mountainside, now runs visitors to otherwise inaccessible upper sections of the park. A small cafe near the main villa serves hot drinks and basic food. The park charges separate admission; train tickets are purchased separately and are recommended early in the day to structure the rest of your hiking schedule. Trail difficulty spans from beginner-suitable (Cypress Trail, Jancing Trail) to moderate (Taiwan Hemlock).

A private vehicle collects you from Taipei Main Station in the early morning, traveling northeast toward the mountains for approximately two hours to reach Taipingshan Villa, the main entrance to Taipingshan National Forest. Upon arrival around 9:30 a.m., you have roughly six hours of unstructured time to visit the protected forest area according to your own pace and interests. The forest offers several hiking trails suited to different abilities and time frames. The Jancing Historic Trail is the shortest at 0.9 kilometers, featuring flat terrain and Level 1 difficulty—suitable for all hikers. Despite its brevity, it ranks among the most scenic walks in the forest. The Cypress Trail, a 1-kilometer looped route at Level 1 difficulty, winds through a Taiwan cypress forest dotted with fallen old-growth trees, making it an ideal forest-bathing experience when quiet. For those seeking a longer walk, the Taiwan Hemlock Trail extends 2.2 kilometers on a linear two-way route graded Level 2. Hikers often describe this quieter section as a "fairy forest" due to its thick canopy and shaded passage through hemlock woodland. Beyond hiking, the Bong Bong Train—a heritage railway originally built for timber transport—accesses sections of the park not reachable on foot and offers perspective on the forest's logging history. A small cafe located approximately 100 meters up the stairs from Taipingshan Villa serves hot and cold drinks along with simple snacks and light meals, providing a convenient rest point during your visit. The visitor center for Taipingshan National Forest is located at a lower elevation along the mountain road and is not typically included on this tour unless otherwise arranged. A small gift shop at Taipingshan Villa stocks basic supplies. Timing your activities is flexible within the six-hour window. Many visitors begin with the Bong Bong Train to establish their bearings, then structure the remainder of their day around available hiking time. All decisions regarding which trails, attractions, or stops to prioritize rest entirely with you. In late afternoon, typically around 3:45 p.m., your private vehicle departs Taipingshan Villa for the return journey to Taipei Main Station, arriving by approximately 6 p.m. Travel times remain subject to traffic conditions on the mountain road and approaching Taipei.
