Thailand: Bangkok, Golden Triangle & Andaman Islands — 9 Days

Bangkok's royal temples to Chiang Rai's Mekong border, Chiang Mai's elephant sanctuary, and Phi Phi Islands by boat

This nine-day route moves through three distinct regions of Thailand, each with its own geographic and cultural logic. Bangkok begins with the temples that anchor the city's religious and political identity: the 5.5-ton solid gold Buddha at Wat Traimit, the vast Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho, and the Emerald Buddha housed within the Grand Palace complex. A flight north brings you to Chiang Rai, where the Ruak and Mekong Rivers converge at the Golden Triangle—the point where Thailand, Burma, and Laos meet—and where Wat Rong Khun's white-painted structures rise against mountain jungle. Chiang Mai deepens the northern experience with a half-day at an ethical elephant sanctuary, a boat cruise along the Kok River to Karen hill-tribe villages, a climb by cable car to Doi Suthep temple, and a traditional Kan Toke dinner with northern folk dance. The route concludes in the south: a full day on the Phi Phi Islands by boat, with limestone cliffs and clear Andaman water, followed by a free day to visit Phuket's coastline independently.

Day by day

You arrive at Bangkok airport and are met by an English-speaking guide. The remainder of the day is unscheduled.
2Bangkok's Royal Temples and Grand PalaceWat Traimit · Wat Pho · Grand Palace complex and Wat Phra Kaew · Riva Surya
After breakfast at your hotel, you begin a half-day exploration of Bangkok's most significant religious and royal landmarks. Your first stop is Wat Traimit, the Temple of the Golden Buddha, which houses a remarkable solid gold Buddha statue standing 3 meters high and weighing 5.5 tons. Carved in the Sukhothai style, this image ranks among Thailand's most impressive Buddha sculptures. From Wat Traimit, you proceed to Wat Pho, Bangkok's oldest and largest temple. Here stands Thailand's largest Reclining Buddha—a monumental work of religious and artistic significance that demands time to fully appreciate. The temple holds additional historical importance as Thailand's first public education center, a role it maintained for centuries. Your final destination is the Grand Palace complex and Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, constructed in 1782 under King Rama I. The palace grounds showcase nine towers, the Pantheon of Kings with its distinctive golden domes, intricate murals, and elaborate ceramic decorations. Within Wat Phra Kaew rests the Emerald Buddha, a 48.3-centimeter figure carved from a single piece of jade in emerald color. Estimated to have been sculpted in southern China around the 15th century, this revered image holds immeasurable cultural and artistic value. Its ceremonial robes are changed seasonally throughout the year. Thais believe that prayer before this sacred image brings good fortune. Depending on availability, you may visit interior halls including the Throne Room, Official Reception Hall, and Coronation Hall. Note that these spaces may occasionally be closed on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, or for special occasions. A dress code applies for all temple and palace visits: women must wear long skirts and sleeved tops; men must wear long pants and regular shirts without patterns. You return to your hotel mid-afternoon, allowing time to rest before the evening. Lunch is taken at Riva Surya during the tour. Overnight at your Bangkok hotel.

The cruise returns to Chiang Rai, then you depart overland toward Chiang Mai, stopping en route to view Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple). This modern temple symbolizes the purity of Buddhism through its bright white color and mirrored ornaments, set against mountain scenery and tropical jungle. The drive to Chiang Mai takes approximately 3–4 hours via Wiang Pa Pao district, with lunch at a local restaurant. Upon arrival, you ascend via cable car to Doi Suthep, the most revered temple in northern Thailand. From the top, you have expansive views over the Chiang Mai valley. After checking in at your hotel and refreshing, you are treated to a Kan Toke dinner—a ceremonial northern Thai meal served while dancers perform a series of folk narratives. Colorfully dressed hill-tribe performers present their own traditional dances after dinner.
5Chiang Mai: Elephant Sanctuary, Orchid Plantation & Artisan Streetorchid plantation · Kanta Elephant Sanctuary · artisan street in Chiang Mai

You then meet, feed, interact with, and play with the elephants in a natural environment, including joining them in the river for bathing. After tea, coffee, and seasonal fruit, you depart the sanctuary and drive to an orchid plantation for a buffet lunch, where you observe the unique beauty of the floral species.
