Thakhek Loop: Karst Caves, Plateau & Mekong — 8 Days

Cycle and transfer through Laos' limestone heartland—from Bolaven coffee country to a 7km underground river, ending in Vientiane.

This eight-day route traces the Thakhek Loop through central Laos between coffee plantations, karst mountains, and the Mekong River. The journey begins in Pakse, rises onto the Bolaven Plateau via Salavan, crosses into Savannakhet—Laos's second-largest city—then enters the limestone country east of Thakhek where cave systems, dead-tree reservoirs, and the Konglor underground river form the loop's centerpiece. The route returns westward along the Nam Theun 2 Plateau before descending to Vientiane. Most days combine cycling with vehicle transfers; the Konglor cave passage and water-taxi rides provide the loop's defining moments. This is terrain for riders with moderate fitness and comfort on rural roads.

Highlights

  • Cycling Route 20 through Salavan Province, a lesser-traveled region marked by colonial-era history and rural villages
  • Savannakhet's French colonial quarter, street art, riverside Mekong cycling, and night-market food tour
  • Cave Alley east of Thakhek: Falang swim hole, Elephant Cave, and Buddha Cave in karst limestone territory
  • Nakai Plateau's dead-tree landscape and reflections in Nam Theun 2 Reservoir
  • Konglor Cave: 7-kilometer sampan journey through an underground river, followed by cycling the valley's far side
  • Evening ride through Vientiane, including Patuaxay Arch and That Luang Temple, with riverside dinner on the Mekong

Day by day

1Pakse to Salavan via Route 20Salavan · Route 20 · Wat Pa
Cycle north on Route 20 into Salavan Province, a region that sees few international cyclists. The route passes through rural villages and jungle terrain. Stop at Wat Pa, a forest temple in Salavan itself—a quiet town that carries the weight of its history; it was heavily bombed during the Second Indochina War and rebuilt thereafter. The blend of cycling and transfer covers 70 kilometers of riding and 35 kilometers by vehicle. Overnight in Salavan.
2Salavan to Savannakhet through Coffee CountrySalavan to Savannakhet · Route 15
Head east on Route 15 through rural villages and coffee plantations, then transfer north to Savannakhet. Arrive in the late afternoon. The day combines 70 kilometers of cycling with a 175-kilometer transfer (approximately four hours by vehicle).
3Savannakhet: Colonial Quarter, Riverside & Night MarketSavannakhet · night market · Mekong · stilted river restaurant
Savannakhet, Laos's second-largest city, retains a distinct colonial heritage. A city tour visits the old French quarter, including street art and cafes built in colonial style. Cycle along the Mekong to Bung Va Lake and eat lunch at a stilted river restaurant. Visit the museum and temples, then visit the night market on foot. The day covers approximately 45 kilometers of cycling and reveals the texture of a city that has remained relatively quiet but is gradually opening to tourism.
4Savannakhet to ThakhekSavannakhet to Thakhek · Thakhek
Transfer 110 kilometers south to Thakhek. After lunch, the afternoon is free to cycle or walk the town at your own pace, marking the start of the Thakhek Loop proper.
5Thakhek Loop: Cave Alley—Falang, Elephant & Buddha CavesThakhek · Buddha Cave · Falang swim hole · Elephant Cave · Cave Alley to Nakai
Leave Thakhek heading east on Route 12 and immediately enter karst mountains and jungle. This section is known locally as Cave Alley—limestone peaks dominate, and cave openings punctuate the landscape. Visit three major caves: Falang swim hole, Elephant Cave, and Buddha Cave. The karst terrain itself—soluble rock shaped by water over millennia—creates a landscape distinct from the rest of the region. Ride 65 kilometers and transfer 30 kilometers to Nakai.
6Nakai Plateau: Dead Trees, Reservoir & Rock ViewpointNakai Plateau · Rock Viewpoint · Nam Theun 2 Reservoir · Buddha statues · Cool Pool
The Nakai Plateau presents a landscape unlike the rest of the journey. Dead trees and water dominate—the Nam Theun 2 Reservoir occupies much of the plateau, and drowned tree stumps reflect in still water, creating a stark visual contrast. Cycle through the plateau, visiting Buddha statues and Cool Pool along the way. The landscape offers quiet, open space; if time and interest permit, arrange a boat trip through the reservoir's waterways via the guesthouse. Overnight at Rock Viewpoint. Cycle 60 kilometers.
7Konglor Cave: 7-Kilometer Underground River by SampanKonglor Cave · karst valley · valley's other side · Ban Natane · Na Hin
A 40-kilometer cycle ride through a karst valley leads to Konglor Cave, the loop's centerpiece. Board a wooden sampan (long boat with an outboard motor) and travel 7.5 kilometers through an underground river—pitch black except for headlamps, twisting far below the earth's surface until emerging into daylight at remote villages. During the first portion, stop for a walking section where stalactites, stalagmites, and cave formations are illuminated. After the cave passage, cycle the valley's other side and stay at Ban Natane before returning to your resort in Na Hin. The highlight of the loop. Cycle 60 kilometers.
8Na Hin to Vientiane: Mekong Riverside and Temple EveningPaksan · Buddha Park · Patuaxay Arch · That Luang Temple · Mekong shores
Transfer 280 kilometers north to Vientiane along the main road, stopping at Paksan for lunch on the riverside. Arrive in the capital in the afternoon. Time permitting, visit Buddha Park before an evening ride around the city, taking in Patuaxay Arch and That Luang Temple. Conclude with dinner—local-style BBQ—on the shores of the Mekong. Evening ride covers approximately 25 kilometers.
