The Silk Road Frontier: Dunhuang and Jiayuguan — 4 Days

Ancient trade routes, desert oases, and Ming fortifications along China's northwestern edge

This four-day itinerary traces two of the Silk Road's most historically significant nodes: Dunhuang, a desert oasis city where Buddhist art flourished in cave complexes carved over a thousand years, and Jiayuguan, the westernmost garrison of the Ming Great Wall. The route moves by private transfer and regional train, staying in two locations and allowing time to move through the Mogao Caves, the dunes and freshwater spring of the desert, and the restored fortress architecture of Jiayuguan. The pace is unhurried, with included guides and all transfers handled; meals and hotel accommodation are arranged throughout.

Highlights

  • Mogao Caves near Dunhuang — Buddhist cave temples carved into sandstone cliffs, containing frescoes and statuary

  • Jiayuguan Fort — a bastion of the Great Wall, designated a UNESCO Cultural Heritage site
  • Night market in Dunhuang — local vendors selling regional snacks and crafts
