Tokyo Backstreets: Asakusa & Oshiage by Bike — Half Day

A three-hour cycling route through the residential neighborhoods and everyday haunts of central Tokyo, following local commute paths and established gathering spots.

This half-day cycling tour traces the daily geography of Tokyo's eastern wards—Asakusa and Oshiage—by following the routes and landmarks familiar to local residents. Rather than major temples or tourist precincts, the itinerary moves through quieter streets, a working public bathhouse, neighborhood bars, and secondhand bookshops. Participants depart from central Tokyo and cycle past the Metropolitan Expressway Route 6, visit an apartment building in Kameido (from outside), stop at a sento that serves the area's working community, cross the Sakura Bridge over the Sumida River, and visit local gathering points including a weekend bar and small restaurant. The route covers roughly three hours of cycling on flat terrain, with regular stops at foot-traffic destinations. A guide accompanies the group throughout, and bicycles with helmets are provided.

Highlights

  • Metropolitan Expressway Route 6 — the elevated highway that structures daily commutes across central Tokyo

  • Chikyu-do Bookshop — secondhand paperback bookshop in Asakusa

1Metropolitan Tokyo: Asakusa and Oshiage by Bicyclethe office in Shinkawa, Chuo-ku · Metropolitan Expressway Route 6 · Kameido · Denki-yu · Sakura Bridge · Bar Nobu · Chikyu-do Bookshop · Fukuchan
The tour begins at the office in Shinkawa, Chuo-ku, where participants register, receive safety briefing, and collect rental bicycles with helmets. Following the format of a local commute, the group starts by purchasing a canned beverage before beginning the route. The first point of reference is the Metropolitan Expressway Route 6, an elevated highway visible from street level—the passage most local commuters use daily, though the group observes it from below rather than traversing it. The route then moves eastward to Kameido, passing the residential apartment building that anchors this section of the tour; entry to the building is not permitted due to active residents. The next stop is Denki-yu, a working public bathhouse in Oshiage that opens in the afternoon—the group views the exterior and learns about its role in the neighborhood but does not bathe. From there, the group cycles to Sakura Bridge, a pedestrian and bicycle span crossing the Sumida River and connecting Oshiage with Asakusa proper. In Asakusa, the group passes Bar Nobu, a small establishment frequented on weekends, and visits Chikyu-do Bookshop, where secondhand paperbacks circulate through the neighborhood. The final stop is Fukuchan, a small restaurant typical of the area's local dining. The tour concludes at the starting office after approximately three hours of cycling on flat, paved streets.
