Tokyo Bay by Bicycle — Half-Day Loop

Sumida River, Tsukuda Island & Odaiba ferry crossing — 6 hours from central Tokyo

This half-day cycling route traces Tokyo's waterfront from the city center east to the bay, combining the Sumida River's riverside path with stops at two distinct districts: Tsukuda Island, a former fishing settlement that survived the Tokyo Great Earthquake, and the Tsukiji outer market area, still active as a food destination after the wholesale market relocated to Toyosu. The route includes a ferry crossing between Odaiba and Hinode beneath the Rainbow Bridge (subject to service availability), lunch at Odaiba overlooking the bay, and a return loop past Zojoji Temple and the Imperial Palace before finishing near the start point. Total distance and terrain are suited to moderate fitness; all bikes, helmets, meals, and a guide are included.

The route departs at 09:00 from the office in Shinkawa, Chuo-ku, following registration and safety briefing. Riders cycle north along the Sumida River pathway, the central waterway of Tokyo's urban core, with a photo stop at Chuoohashi Bridge. The route then reaches Tsukuda Island, a former fishing settlement that survived the Tokyo Great Earthquake; a Shinto shrine marks the historic district. Continuing east, the group visits the Tsukiji outer market area (Jogai), where independent vendors continue to operate fresh seafood and produce stalls despite the 2018 relocation of the wholesale market to Toyosu. At Odaiba, a lunch stop includes either a picnic with a provided bento box (weather permitting) or indoor dining at a restaurant on the waterfront. A ferry crossing from Odaiba to Hinode runs for approximately 20 minutes, passing beneath the Rainbow Bridge with views across Tokyo Bay (note: ferry service status varies; confirm prior to tour date). The return leg proceeds past Zojoji Temple, an ancient Buddhist temple standing at the base of Tokyo Tower in Minato ward, and Atago Shrine, a small Shinto shrine located on Mt. Atago. The final segment passes the Imperial Palace, the official residence of the Emperor and Empress, before returning to the office near the start point at approximately 15:00.
