Tokyo by Bicycle: Sumo, Temple & Urban Districts — Half Day

A 3-hour cycling route connecting Ryogoku, Asakusa, Ueno, and Akihabara with local guide and rental equipment

This half-day Tokyo cycling route traces four distinct neighborhoods on the city's east side, each with a separate character. The route begins in Ryogoku, home to the Ryogoku Kokugikan sumo arena and the wrestlers who train in the surrounding streets. It continues to Asakusa, where Senso-ji — Tokyo's oldest Buddhist temple — anchors a historic district of narrow lanes and small shops. From there, riders move through Ueno Park, a large urban green space that changes with the seasons, before finishing in Akihabara, the electronics and anime-focused commercial district. The full route is covered on a rental bicycle with guide support, helmet, and water provided. Departure times are fixed at 09:00 or 13:00 from the operator's office in Chuo-ku.

Highlights

  • Ryogoku sumo district and the history of rikishi (sumo wrestlers) training in residential streets

Riders meet at the operator's office in Shinkawa, Chuo-ku, for registration and a review of guidelines. Departure occurs at either 09:00 or 13:00. The route begins in Ryogoku, the sumo district, where grand tournaments are held in January, May, and September at the Ryogoku Kokugikan. Wrestlers train in neighborhood stables, and the area retains a strong association with the sport. The route then moves to Asakusa and Senso-ji, Tokyo's oldest Buddhist temple. The temple's large gate and main hall dominate the streetscape. From Asakusa, cyclists ride through Ueno Park, which shifts in appearance with the seasons — cherry blossoms in spring, lotus flowers in summer, and autumn leaves in fall. The final destination is Akihabara, the electric town, a dense commercial quarter centered on computer games, anime merchandise, and electronics retail. The route concludes at the operator's office around 12:00 or 16:00, depending on the departure time chosen. Rental bicycle, helmet, water, and guide support are included.
