Tokyo Riverside Cycling: Arakawa, Nakagawa & Fukagawa — Half Day

A 6-hour circuit through Tokyo's river corridors and working neighborhoods, away from central tourist zones

This half-day route follows dedicated cycling paths along the Arakawa and Nakagawa rivers, connecting Tokyo's eastern residential districts with local commerce and older temple grounds. The circuit departs from central Chuo-ku and moves through Kiba Park—a former timber storage site now lined with water access—before reaching Sunamachi Ginza, a shopping street of independent vendors and casual eateries. The route then follows the Arakawa Cycling Road, a long, dedicated riverside path, transitions to the Nakagawa route closer to the water, and passes through Kameido with its arched shrine bridges before returning via an older canal corridor through Fukagawa, a residential area scattered with small shrines and temples. The full loop covers local Tokyo rather than tourist landmarks, and returns to the meeting point by mid-afternoon.

Highlights

  • Cycling through Kiba Park, a 15-hectare waterfront space built on a reclaimed timber wharf
  • Sunamachi Ginza shopping street—a neighborhood row of independent cafes, restaurants, and local shops
  • Arakawa Cycling Road—a dedicated cycling road along the river with minimal traffic
  • Nakagawa Cycling Road—a secondary river route allowing cycling directly alongside the water
  • Kameido Tenmangu Shrine—a Edo-period shrine notable for its arched bridge and torii gates
  • Fukagawa district—a residential quarter with multiple small shrines, temples, and narrow canal-side lanes

The route then passes Kameido Tenmangu Shrine, an Edo-period shrine distinguished by arched bridges and multiple torii gates. The final segment follows an older canal through Fukagawa, a residential area with scattered small shrines and temples set among residential streets.
