Walami Trail: Two Days in Yushan National Park

28km trek across suspension bridges and Japanese-era ruins in remote eastern Taiwan, with one night at Walami Cabin

The Walami Trail runs 28 kilometers through Yushan National Park's remote eastern reaches, following a route that served as a control corridor during the Japanese colonial period. Over two days and one night, the trek crosses six suspension bridges, passes four ruined Japanese police stations, and descends through forest where Formosa black bears still range. You'll sleep at Walami Cabin and visit a restored traditional Bunan Indigenous home on the return. A licensed mountain guide leads the entire route; private van transport connects Hualien at either end.

Day by day

1Hualien to Walami Cabin: Suspension Bridges and Japanese RuinsHualien · Walami Cabin · Batongguan Traversing Trail
A private van departs Hualien in the morning, traveling through the East Rift Valley toward Yushan National Park. The day's 14-kilometer hike begins at the trailhead and follows the Batongguan Traversing Trail, historically Japan's primary control route through this region. The path crosses six suspension bridges offering extended views across the eastern stretches of Yushan National Park. Along the route, four ruined Japanese police stations appear at intervals—structures from the early twentieth century, now half-reclaimed by forest. The trail rises and falls through terrain where the rare Formosa black bear forages; this area remains one of Taiwan's most important sites for wildlife research. Walami Cabin, your overnight stop, sits at the trail's midpoint. Dinner is provided at the cabin.
2Walami Cabin to Hualien: Indigenous Heritage and ReturnWalami Cabin to Hualien · restored traditional Bunan Indigenous home
After breakfast, the group retraces the morning's route downhill toward the trailhead. Before reaching the main trail's end, a short side path branches toward a restored traditional Bunan Indigenous home, built in the distinctive slate stone style of the region. Lunch is taken here. The group then completes the final descent to the trailhead and returns to Hualien by van, marking the end of the trek.
