West Sichuan: Grasslands, Monasteries & Mountain Passes — 9 Days
From Chengdu through Tibetan highlands to Yading Nature Reserve, crossing four mountain passes and trekking among three sacred peaks.
West Sichuan occupies the eastern slopes of the Tibetan plateau, where forested gorges channel dozens of rivers into grasslands and alpine lakes. This 9-day route moves through the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture—a region of active monasteries, prayer flags, and snow-capped mountains inhabited primarily by Tibetan communities. The itinerary combines ground travel through high-altitude valleys with a two-day trek into Yading Nature Reserve, where three sacred mountains (Chenresig, Jambeyang, and Chanadorje) rise above the surrounding landscape. Days in Chengdu frame the journey, beginning with the Panda Breeding Center and Jinli Street's food stalls, then moving westward through trading towns and geological formations toward the reserve.

Day by day
1Arrival in Chengdu and Kuanzhai AlleyKuanzhai Alley · Chengdu airport
You arrive at Chengdu airport and are met by your guide for transfer to your hotel. The remainder of the day is spent in Kuanzhai Alley, a preserved quarter of the old city where historical architecture and the leisure pace of local life remain intact. This neighborhood offers an early sense of Chengdu's unhurried character, a quality that extends into its food culture and the way residents occupy public spaces.
2Chengdu Panda Breeding Center, Jinli Street & People's ParkPanda Breeding Center · Jinli Street · People's Park
The morning begins at the Panda Breeding Center, where you observe the conservation breeding program for giant pandas. You can watch them at multiple activities—eating bamboo, playing, napping—at close enough range to photograph their movements. After lunch, a walking tour of Jinli Street follows, a historically layered commercial street known for local snacks: sticky rice cakes with sesame sauce, spicy chicken skewers, sweet rice jelly, fried beef pancakes, and, for those inclined, seasoned rabbit's heads. Late afternoon brings a walk through People's Park, where you rest with tea at the century-old Heming Teahouse, a social hub where Chengdu residents have gathered for generations.
3Kangding and Mugecuo LakesKangding · Mugecuo Lake · Kangding's central square
A 268-kilometer drive (approximately 3.5 hours) westward leads to Kangding, the administrative center of the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture and a town historically central to trade between Tibet and China. After lunch in a local restaurant, the route continues to Mugecuo Lake, positioned at 3,700 meters and ringed by more than 30 smaller lakes and marshes including Seven Colour Lake, Boiling Springs, and White Sea Lake. The landscape here combines colorful rock carvings, stone houses, prayer flags, and snow-capped mountains. A couple of hours are spent at the main viewpoint, followed by an easy descent walk of 2.5 to 3 hours through the area. The evening concludes with a campfire gathering in Kangding's central square with local residents.
The route heads west over Zheduo Pass (4,298 meters), then descends to the east side of the Mugecuo Lake region and Red Sea lake and grasslands, a landscape backed by snow-capped peaks. A detour stops at a viewpoint for Gongga Shan (7,556 meters), Sichuan's highest peak and a sacred mountain where Tibetans perform clockwise pilgrimage circuits at certain times of year. The mountain mass carries dozens of permanently snow- and ice-covered peaks; clear conditions at sunset can render the summit golden. From the viewpoint, a 45-minute drive across the plateau reaches Xinduqiao, a small Tibetan town known for its combination of vivid vegetation, meandering streams, snow-visible mountains, and traditional Tibetan houses.
5Tagong Grassland, Monasteries & Bamei Stone ForestTagong · Tagong Grassland · Bamei Stone Forest · Xinduqiao · Sakyapa monastery complex · Muya Golden Pagoda · Yajiang
Morning light photography time at Xinduqiao precedes a one-hour drive to Tagong, a small Tibetan town famous for its grasslands and monasteries. The name translates as "a place that the Bodhisattva likes," a title derived from a 7th-century incident when Princess Wencheng, traveling to Lhasa in AD 640, lost a famous statue of Shakyamuni from her cart here. A replica was fashioned and a temple evolved around it; the resulting Sakyapa monastery complex stands as the easternmost of the 108 geomantic "border-taming" temples that radiate from the Jokhang in Lhasa. Continuing through Tagong Grassland, the route passes mani stones—slate pieces carved with the mantra "Om Mani Padme Hom"—and arrives at the Muya Golden Pagoda, a mandala-style Buddhist temple with red walls, yellow tiles, and a gilded spire. Against the backdrop of Yala Snow Mountain, the golden top forms a notable photograph. Thirty minutes further brings Bamei Stone Forest, a geological formation where sharp rocks rise like spears from the mountainside. Locals note that the rock color shifts seasonally with temperature changes. Overnight is in Yajiang.
6Daocheng and Yading Nature Reserve EntranceDaocheng · Yading Nature Reserve · Zunsheng Tower · Tibetan-style guesthouse near the reserve entrance
A 280-kilometer drive (approximately 4.5 hours, with photo stops) leads to Daocheng, situated at 3,700 meters and known locally as Shangri-La. Zunsheng Tower, a five-story white pagoda at the town center, consists of a 37-meter chorten surrounded by 114 smaller chortens arranged in four layers—each smaller structure representing one of the 114 villages across the Ganzi Tibetan Region. Local Tibetans can often be seen circling the towers clockwise in prayer; visitors should maintain the same direction when approaching Buddhist sites. From Daocheng, an 82-kilometer continuation reaches Yading Nature Reserve, described as China's most notable reserve. Positioned at the eastern end of the Himalayan range, Yading holds three sacred Tibetan mountains: Chenresig (Xiannairi, Avalokitesvara, 6,032 meters), Jambeyang (Yangmaiyong, Manjusri, 5,958 meters), and Chanadorje (Xianuoduoji, Vajrapani, 5,958 meters). Accommodation for the night is in a Tibetan-style guesthouse near the reserve entrance.
7Yading Nature Reserve First Trek to Chonggu MonasteryYading Nature Reserve · Chonggu Monastery · Zaguanben · Yading village · viewpoint in Yading Nature Reserve
The two-day trekking phase begins with a sightseeing bus ride to Zaguanben, the trailhead, followed by a short walk to Chonggu Monastery. From there the trail moves through forested terrain offering views of alpine wildlife, alpine flowers, grasslands, glaciers, and rivers, eventually reaching a viewpoint where all three of Yading's sacred mountains become visible together. The day concludes in Yading village, a small Tibetan settlement with 28 households, situated at 3,900 meters. The hiking distance is 7 kilometers with 400 meters of ascent and 100 meters of descent.
8Yading Lakes Trek: Milk Lake & Five-Colour LakeFive-Colour Lake · Zaguanben · Luorong pasture · Chonggu Monastery
A second trekking day combines two routes from the reserve. Beginning again at Zaguanben with the walk to Chonggu, an electric car ride follows to Luorong pasture (4,200 meters), a landscape of cattle farms and clear streams. From Luorong, a 4.5-kilometer uphill trek (demanding at this elevation) leads to Milk Lake at 4,600 meters, a 400-meter ascent. A packed lunch and small oxygen bottles are carried as altitude precautions. After time at Milk Lake, the trail continues to Five-Colour Lake (4,700 meters), where natural scenery is observed before returning to Chonggu Monastery and taking the shuttle back to the reserve entrance. The hiking distance totals 7 kilometers with 400 meters of ascent and 100 meters of descent. Overnight returns to the guesthouse used on Day 6.
