Yanbaru National Park Hiking Tour — Okinawa

Half-day and full-day guided hikes through subtropical rainforest, limestone formations, and waterfalls in Japan's northern Okinawa

Yanbaru National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site occupying the northern reaches of Okinawa's main island, shelters a subtropical rainforest distinct from mainland Japanese ecosystems. The park's hiking trails wind through dense jungle, past limestone karst formations, and alongside waterfalls fed by the region's humid climate. The Okinawan Rail, an endemic flightless bird found nowhere else, inhabits these forests alongside diverse flora adapted to tropical conditions. Guided hikes range from half-day excursions of one to two hours of active trekking to full-day routes covering three to six hours of walking, depending on terrain and ability. Trails include approaches to Hiji Waterfall in the Kunigami area—a descent through natural paths and steep stairs to a waterfall dropping into a pool—and circuits through limestone terrain near Mount Kugani and Mount Nekumachiji in Ogimi village, where the topography shifts between rocky jungle and coastal views. Bilingual guides lead all hikes, provide photography documentation, and handle logistics including accommodation pickups and lunch service on full-day tours.
